How to tell when your car needs new tyres

An important safety feature of any motor vehicle, the tyres impact on general vehicle handling, ability to manoeuvre on roads and corners and provide grip for extreme weather conditions. To help you better understand how to identify when your vehicle is due for new tyres or a tyre replacement, the team here at Noel’s Progress Road Pitstop have put together a handy guide below.

How long do new tyres usually last?

Consider tyres an investment. Typically, new tyres will last around 40,000km. This will vary from vehicle to vehicle and different factors will affect the lifespan of your new tyres such as driving habits and the climate.

Tips for extending the life of new tyres

  • Check the tread depth

The legal minimum limit for tyre tread depth in Queensland is 1.5mm. If you can’t do it yourself using a tread depth indicator, go to a tyre fitting station (such as Noel’s Progress Road Pitstop).

  • Always check the air pressure

Regularly checking the air pressure goes a long way toward extending the lifespan of your tyres. Over or under-inflated tyres lead to uneven pressure on the threads, resulting in uneven wear on the tyres.

  • Checking the tyre alignment

Every 5,000km, check the tyre alignment. Proper tyre alignment will mean even wear on tyres.

Signs that tyre replacement is needed

  • Tread depth falls below 1.5mm

Tyres with illegal or thin depths can spin out of control on wet surfaces, causing damage and accidents. It is highly recommended that even before the 1.5mm minimum depth is reached, it is safer to have the tyres replaced.

  • Sidewall leaks & weak spots

Tyre sidewalls only need visual checks. Look for traces of tracks or cuts as these will be quite obvious. These marks are signs that your tyre is developing leaks or is ready to blow. This also includes cracked or weathered sidewalls. When you see these signs, have your tyre replaced as soon as possible.

  • Vibrations

Vibrations become noticeable on unpaved or poorly paved roads. But you can also notice vibrations on long drives. This could mean that your tyres are misaligned, unbalanced or your shock absorbers are starting to go because there is a problem with your tyres. If this is the case for you, have your tyres and shock absorbers checked right away
